PSYC/KINE/GH 4007 3.00 Healthy Aging Community-Service Learning (CSL) course enrollment questionnaire

Course Description:

This blended format course offers students the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills gained in the prerequisite course PSYC/KINE/GH 3.00 Healthy Aging Trends and Issues to a practicum /field placement with an organization serving older adults. Working in teams, students participate in practice-based community service learning (CSL), where they interact with older adults and engage in activities to address community needs. Through structured reflection, field-experience and supervision, students gain a deeper understanding of the concepts, methods and theoretical foundations underlying healthy aging. Ultimately, these placements provide the concrete experiences required for students to bridge theory and practice. The CSL component of the course is intentionally designed to promote professionalism skills and other transferable skills (e.g., communication, conflict management, time-management, organization, teamwork). As a blended format course, students will engage in 64 hours of fieldwork over 8 weeks (8 hours a week including reading week), AND approximately 4 in-class sessions (2 at the beginning of the term and 2 at the end of the term) depending on the number of students and number of community partners. Students will be evaluated through online activities (e.g., Team Wiki, critical reflection, knowledge assessment), CSL field placement (e.g., interpersonal/relations in the workplace, communication, application of ideas, and professionalism), and in class activities (e.g., oral commentary). They also will be evaluated and facilitated by a field-placement supervisor.

Permissions:

The course is open to Faculty of Health students registered in the Honours program, who have completed 84 credits, including the prerequisite course PSYC/KINE/GH 4006 3.00. This course is a Course Credit Exclusion (CCE) for NURS 3000 3.00.

Spaces are available on a first come first serve basis. Priority will be given to students enrolled in the Certificate in Aging (https://www.yorku.ca/health/certificate-in-aging/) and/or who have completed at least 6 additional credits in aging focused courses.
