2024-2025 LEAD With Us - Calumet and Stong Colleges' Shining Stars & Gems

Established in 2018 by the Head of Calumet College (Dr. Jennine S.Rawana) and the former Head of Stong College (Dr. Mazen J. Hamadeh), these awards recognize the outstanding leadership achievements of Peer Leaders. These students embody the values of the Colleges with a vision to embrace the shared responsibility of building a vibrant and bold community and have made significant contributions to Calumet and Stong Colleges (CCSC).

These awards are given to Calumet College students and Stong College students annually at the Colleges’ Award Ceremony in April and underscore the commitment of the Colleges to their shared vision to "Inspire learning, leadership and citizenship".

ELIGIBILITY
Eligible students must meet all the minimum criteria outlined below. Please note some awards may have additional criteria.

- Enrolled in undergraduate studies
- Good academic standing
- Affiliated with Calumet College or Stong College
- Exhibit the values of Calumet & Stong Colleges: Student-Centric; Collaborative; Mentorship; Engagement; Bold
- Have already completed the Foundational Peer Leadership Training (FPLT)
- Hold a volunteer peer leadership position, is a volunteer, or is affiliated in some capacity with Calumet College and/or Stong College as a volunteer.

Please Note:
Students in paid positions will be considered for these awards, based only on their volunteer involvement with the Colleges.

Calumet and Stong College each have their own designated gem award category for every award listed below:


Diamond Legacy Award for Significant Community Contribution, Enduring Change, and Inspiring Vision
This award recognizes a graduating student who has left an enduring legacy in their College with respect to their leadership accomplishments and lasting contributions to the vision of the College. The student will have left an indelible impact empowering others and made a significant positive difference in the community that will continue to thrive and succeed despite their absence.

Emerald Initiative Award for Student Contribution and Engagement
Given to a student who continues to go beyond the call of duty. Always with a positive attitude this student shows up regularly, brings their ideas forward, is proactive in addressing student/program needs and delivers projects with grace.

Ruby Impact Award for Student Leadership and Community Building
Celebrated for their collaborative spirit this student has ensured that whatever they do they make a positive difference in the lives of their fellow peers and/or local community. This student achieved significant milestones over more than a year that helped the College achieve its vision.

Sapphire Dream Team Award for Visionary Leadership and Transformative Community Engagement
There is no I in team work. Greater than the sum of its individual talents, this team has demonstrated collaboration, collegiality, openness in sharing ideas and valuing different perspectives. The team has accomplished a multi-year project or implemented a strategy over more than one year that meets the College vision with a significant contribution to the community.

Topaz Bold Leader Award for Leadership Capacity and Community Engagement in First Year at York University
This award recognizes a first-year student who has shown significant leadership accomplishment by actively being involved in College life. This student is celebrated for their active engagement and their significant contribution to their cohort.

Jade Award for Contributing to an Inclusive Community
This award recognizes a student or student-led team who has contributed to creating an inclusive College community and their impact aligns with York University’s Decolonization, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (DEDI) Strategy and the Colleges’ Strategic Plan priority of EDI. This student or team achieved significant milestones over a minimum of one academic year to foster a vibrant, welcoming and inclusive community, as well as lead programming and initiatives that are sustainable and support equity-deserving groups.

Pearl Award for Outstanding Presidential Leadership
This award recognizes a Calumet/Stong College-affiliated student organization or club led by a CCSC-affiliated student president or project lead who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities and skills during their leadership position. This student has a clearly articulated a distinguishing leadership style and often leads with compassion, empathy, and fairness. This student has demonstrated significant leadership accomplishments and has notably improved the functioning, cohesiveness, and/or the productivity of their organizational team.

Nomination Process

To be considered for one of the awards, the following process must be followed:

Students are nominated by a member of the Colleges community including Colleges’ staff member(s), Peer Leader(s), Fellows or Alumni, excluding College Heads. (Primary Nominator)
The second nomination can be internal or external to the Colleges' community, excluding College Heads. (Secondary Nominator)

Primary and Secondary nominators must directly submit nominations using this form by the deadline. You cannot nominate yourself.

Application Process

Students will need to submit their application package (in one PDF file). In this PDF file, you must include the following in this specific order:


A. Chart of Involvement with the Colleges , 3 columns: Column 1 - Position Title, Column 2 - Date Range (MM/DD/YYYY), Column 3 - Contribution. (Please use Calibri font, 12-point size text) (please use the template found on our website)

B. Student’s Statement Letter describing their involvement in the College(s) and how they have contributed to fostering a culture of social and intellectual growth and building a vibrant community at Calumet, Stong or York University. The letter must be organized into three (3) sections:

1. List your roles and key responsibilities with the Colleges

2. Describe your contribution to the Colleges' Vision, Mission and Values

3. Describe how you have contributed to Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion issues in the Colleges

(max. 500 words, Calibri font and 12-point size text).

Please note that for the Dream Team (Sapphire) Award, the application/personal statement needs to be submitted and signed by the entire team. And, the accomplishments of the team and impact on the community/society need to be cited. Please provide the organization's/team's Vision, Mission, Values and Direction/Priorities. As the Dream Team Award is based on multi-year accomplishments, past recipients may re-apply three (3) years after receiving the Dream Team Award.
