BOLD IDEAS!: "From Vulnerable to Invulnerable. Resilience through unmasking fear." - March 19, 2020

CALUMET AND STONG COLLEGES invite you to attend BOLD IDEAS!:

Bold Ideas serves as a platform for citizens, activists and leaders to share their personal, career and life experiences and challenges with the community, and how they negotiated their life paths around these challenges. Non-conformists are welcome.

We believe in the power of ideas, actions and experiences. We believe that humans are catalysts for a better world. We believe each experience is unique and can elevate the consciousness of others.

Bold Ideas is where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. It is where extraordinary people share extraordinary ideas that challenge our perspectives of what is possible, what is not possible and what is certain.

Please join us at our upcoming Bold Ideas session:

Date: Thursday, March 19, 2020
Time: 12:30-1:15 pm
Location: SC MDR (SC 101)
Presenter: Ashim Sharma (Honors BA in Psychology/English, CCSC Leadership Coach, Active Bystander, and Co-lead of the Gender Equity co-Lab (GEL) within the Center for Sexual Violence Response, Support, and Education)

Presenter's Bio: Ashim is currently completing his BA in Psychology and English at York University and is looking to pursue a Master’s in counselling. Throughout his undergraduate years, Ashim learned to cope with and thrive with his mental health disorder. He is currently leading the GEL group within The Centre for Sexual Violence Response, Support & Education, a Peer Mentor within UPSA, a Volunteer with SASSL, and a Calumet & Stong Colleges Leadership Coach since 2018. After living with a mother diagnosed with schizophrenia for most of his life and attending to his own trauma-induced psychosis, Ashim has come to learn a lot about mental health, as well as its nuances within the South Asian community.

Session Summary: It is often difficult to speak about one’s struggles, especially in the age of social media. It is far too easy, and seen as ‘appropriate,’ to never talk about our own shortcomings. We often tend to put up a wall in order to feel invulnerable, impossible to harm. In this session, Ashim will take a new approach to feeling invulnerable, being open and vulnerable. By sharing his firsthand experiences, Ashim will discuss the many ways (or lack thereof) mental health is addressed cross-culturally. Ashim is looking to unpack how mental health is stigmatized in different communities, specifically the South Asian community. As a loved one of someone suffering from a mental health disorder and as a survivor/thriver himself, he hopes to provide a new insight on the ways we communicate and “help” struggling loved ones, and the pressures we can put on ourselves when dealing with our own mental health.

Experience a moment of learning and sharing ideas.
